3 ways to save an unproductive day ? Business Management Daily ...

It?s easy enough to reach the midpoint of a workday and realize that you haven?t accomplished what you?d hoped. But you can still salvage the day.

Three strategies for making progress on a critical project:

1.??Schedule a 20-minute ?time oasis.? If you can find just 20 uninterrupted minutes in your afternoon schedule, that?s enough to make serious progress on an important project.

Move other obligations forward by a day or a few hours. If nec???es??sary, stay at the office an additional 20 minutes. Turn off your cellphone and quit email. Duck in??to an empty meeting room. Do what??ever it takes to force yourself to focus.

2.??Take stock. Maybe you?re fo??cused on what you haven?t accomplished, rather than what you have achieved. Set up a work diary to track what you?ve done in a day. It?s much like a personal diary, where you can write about hopes, events, plans and feelings.

The benefit: You?ll feel a boost of happiness by taking stock of any meaningful work you?ve done.

And, over time, you may start to see themes emerging in your posts. As one work diarist commented, ?I saw that my comments seemed to re??flect a pessimistic tone which, in retro??spect, may have been unwarranted. I now try to approach projects with a more optimistic frame of mind.?

3.??Set yourself up for a better tomorrow. Stop work on an important project while you?re still in the middle. If you?re writing something, for example, leave off midsentence or midparagraph. Even Ernest Hemingway used this trick. Somehow, it?s easier to slide back into the work.

ITA removes ?agony? for Hipmunk engineers - ITA Software Blog

Hipmunk, the winner of Travel + Leisure?s Best Travel Websites 2011, is known for their lovable logo and their commitment to removing ?agony? from travel planning. ?We wanted to find a way to give people the best high level understanding of results and make it easier to mentally narrow down what the best options are,? said Adam Goldstein, co-founder and CEO, Hipmunk.

Hipmunk integrated ITA?s QPX? pricing and shopping technology in January 2011, to give travelers more comprehensive results and more flexibility in how those results are displayed. According to Adam, ?The way we standardized how the results are displayed was a huge differentiator, and a big reason why people love Hipmunk. We built a site to help users find a way to easily compare schedules, prices, lengths of flights and duration for example. As it turned out our users became passionate about Hipmunk and we see them sharing their Hipmunk experiences with friends, family and colleagues. What we?re doing does take the agony out of the experience, and it worked out far better than we hoped!?

Hipmunk recently implemented ITA?s Boombox, a comprehensive integration platform that provides a simple API and hosted service layer for QPX. Adam said, ?QPX and Boombox certainly remove agony from our engineers? lives, allowing them to work a lot more quickly and efficiently to roll out new features that help users.?

I sat down with Adam to ask him about his thoughts on travel technology, the success Hipmunk?s had with QPX over the past year and a few other personal thoughts.

What have you done with QPX that has helped differentiate Hipmunk or been really popular with your users?
There are several things we?ve been able to do with QPX that help remove agony from travel planning, such as:

  • Calendar shopping,?
  • Multi-city shopping,?
  • Search filters for multiple airlines and flexible dates,?
  • ITA routing language that lets users fine tune search parameters before they click search, and?
  • Integrated airfare shopping results with Google Calendars.?

QPX lets us enable people to specify what they want and what they don?t want at the time of search. They can use special routing notation to search for certain airlines, cities, flights -- or even specify cities they don?t want to connect through, maybe because those airports are known for having terribly long layovers, frequent delays or weather issues -- all to return the most relevant search results right away. This has been pretty popular with frequent fliers.

Another thing that?s really popped is the ability to interact with people?s calendars. When users log in, they can integrate their Google Calendar with Hipmunk to easily see which flights fit within their schedules. QPX powers that flight search and is super flexible in supporting this integration.

How has Hipmunk benefited the most since working with us?
The quality and speed is great! This applies to the results we return to users as well as the speed in which we?re able to roll out changes to our site. We talked about the Boombox integration earlier -- but it?s nice that our users benefit from new features more often when we don?t have to worry about implementation.

What change in technology has had the biggest impact on the travel industry over the last decade?
The biggest impact? Probably smart phones. We recently saw our first day in which our mobile usage exceeded web usage. Even absent any macro trends, people are finding mobile experiences to be much more seamless and important. And, having the same power on your phone as you do on a desktop is incredible -- especially if you?re stuck in an airport and need to find a flight out. I think more and more of the technical power and experience we have on our mobile devices will migrate to desktops as well.

What have you learned about the travel industry that surprised you?
There are a lot of big companies in this industry that are slow to adapt to change. The systems and websites of some airlines and suppliers make engineering changes extremely slow. We?re really fortunate to be able to iterate as quickly as we do.

What's the funniest thing that's happened to you while traveling?
That depends on your sense of humor. I?ve been stranded and have bumped into people I know half way across the world, in Buenos Aires and Hong Kong. But, one especially funny incident; we were in Turkey, driving through the countryside between two cities about eight hours apart -- basically, in the middle of nowhere. We saw a restaurant called Mantar Evi - which means Mushroom House. It sprung up pretty randomly, and the entire menu was all mushrooms. I was pleasantly surprised. Honestly, it was the most delicious and best meal we had on our entire trip. Check it out if you?re ever in Korkuteli Turkey.

Hipmunk has been a great team to work with over the past year plus! I?m looking forward to helping them come up with new ways to remove ?agony? from the travel planning experience. You can learn more about Hipmunk on their Google+ page.

Seventh grader steers bus to safety in Washington (+video)

When his school bus driver collapsed, 13-year-old Jeremy Wuitschick grabbed the steering wheel and pulled the keys from the ignition.

A quick-thinking Washington state middle school student steered a school bus to safety after he saw the driver slump over and pass out from an apparent heart attack, authorities said.

Surveillance video shows 13-year-old Jeremy Wuitschick rushing down the aisle and grabbing the wheel Monday morning as another student yelled "Oh my God!"

"I was just thinking I don't want to die," Jeremy told the Seattle Times. "I turned to the right. Turned to the side of the road. Took the keys out of the ignition. We started slowing down, and I said, 'Somebody call 911!'"

Jeremy and another student, Johnny Wood, did chest compressions on the driver. Police in the town of Milton, about 30 miles south of Seattle, quickly showed up and the 12 students were escorted off the bus.

The bus didn't hit any other vehicles, and no one was injured. Police Chief Bill Rhoads credited Wuitschick's quick actions.

"We're just happy the kid was thinking on his feet," he said.

Deputy Schools Superintendent Jeff Short said the 43-year-old driver was in "grave condition" at a Tacoma, Wash.,? hospital. He said students go over emergency procedures several times annually, learning what to do if a bus driver is incapacitated.

"It's just for this type of situation," Short said. "I think they did an outstanding job."

Selecting Practical Plans For Home Improvement Problems ...

Posted on April 9, 2012

Home improvement is very much like an investment because everything you do can be geared to increase value. Home improvements, as a means of increasing the value of a home, have spawned a complete industry of businesses that cater to the needs of the homeowner. House flipping is the name of this new industry and it has made many people very rich. What you need to do, before you start, is look at the different types of home improvement projects that homeowners become involved in. One smart way of looking at this is making your house save you money on utility bills. You may want to also consider issues of home safety and health. We will be discussing these factors further in this report.

If the soil right next to your home is sloping down and into your house, then that can cause water damage in basements. What you want to prevent is rain water from accumulating at the base of your home.

In the event that your basement walls have cracks due to moisture and water pressure, then that should be fixed and it is not cheap. The way to address the grade issue is with the addition of soil so you can build up the ground level. A qualified landscape expert will be able to make specific suggestions that will rectify the problem. One health hazard most homeowners are aware of is the radon gas that seeps from the ground into our homes. Many health issues have been blamed on the radon gas that seeps into some homes. Radon gas is a very serious issue as one of the risks from having it seep into your home is cancer. What you can do is seal your basement walls, floor and other appropriate areas. One other benefit from doing this sealing is that you will also keep out excessive moisture as well as radon gas. Browse Visit THIS WebSite for in-depth suggestions.

You can find some really good and useful home improvement organizational systems on the market. There are some pretty clever ideas on the market from the closet to under the bed and others. Chance are good you have seen these, or maybe you have even bought and used them before. Just about all the time they will be made of plastic because that is cheap and works just fine. They will work well for closets and basements, and if you want to make people mad put them in their closet ? not yours.

One of the deciding factors with many home improvement jobs is whether or not you are able to do it alone. Many people only allow people they know to work on their homes, but not everybody knows people like that.

There are many ways to assess a contractor, so just be careful about it and be thorough.

Clinton warns of "additional provocations" from North Korea

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned on Tuesday that history points to "additional provocations" from North Korea after its expected rocket launch this week, suggesting isolated Pyongyang feared closer relations with the outside world.

In a wide-ranging speech on U.S. policy toward the Asia-Pacific region, Clinton also called on China to embrace and participate more in regional security efforts and to address the problem of cyber theft of intellectual property.

North Korea's proposed long-range rocket launch would breach U.N. sanctions imposed to stop the country developing a missile that could carry a nuclear warhead.

North Korea's decision to launch what it calls a weather satellite but which others see as an advanced missile "raises questions about Pyongyang's seriousness in saying that it desires to improve relations with us and its neighbors," she said.

"This launch will give credence to the view that North Korean leaders see improved relations with the outside world as a threat to their system. And recent history strongly suggests that additional provocations may follow," Clinton said a speech to cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Clinton contrasted Pyongyang's provocative stance with developments in Myanmar, where long-jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi was voted into parliament this month as part of a cautious reform and opening to the outside world by a country that had for decades been as reclusive as North Korea.

"It is still too early to say how this story will end," said Clinton, who is preparing to send the first U.S. ambassador to the country, also known as Burma, in decades.

Clinton dismissed talk of a new Cold War in Asia between the United States and China, saying that the two powers have since the 1970s "gone from being two nations with hardly any ties to speak of, to being thoroughly, inescapably interdependent."

U.S.-LED SYSTEM IN ASIA

Addressing frequent allegations from some quarters in China that the United States is trying to thwart China's ambitions in Asia and beyond, Clinton said "a thriving China is good for America, and a thriving America is good for China."

"We will only succeed in building a peaceful, prosperous Asia-Pacific if we succeed in building an effective U.S.-China relationship," she added.

The United States and China "are also working hard to reduce the risk of miscalculation or miscues between the American and Chinese militaries and forge a durable military-to-military relationship," said Clinton.

U.S. efforts to built up the security architecture and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region was not a secret strategy "for protecting Western prerogatives and denying rising powers their fair share of influence" or "trying to draw them into a rigged system," Clinton insisted.

"Fundamental freedoms and human dignity; an open, free, transparent, and fair economic system; the peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for the territorial integrity of states; these are norms that benefit everyone and that help all people and nations live and trade in peace," she said.

Emerging powers such as China, India and Indonesia "have benefited from the security it provides, the markets it opens, and the trust it fosters," Clinton said of the Asia-Pacific system forged by the United States and its allies.

"As a consequence, they have a real stake in the success of that system," she said.

Clinton, shifting from broad regional policy comments, told the cadets the United States was "increasingly concerned about the growing threat to our economic and national security posed by cyber intrusions, particularly the theft of intellectual property via cyber means."

Without directly accusing China, thought by most experts to be the chief source of cyber intrusions, she said it was critical for Washington and Beijing to establish "clear and acceptable practices in cyberspace."
