New evidence dinosaurs were strong swimmers

Apr. 8, 2013 ? A University of Alberta researcher has identified some of the strongest evidence ever found that dinosaurs could paddle long distances.

Working together with an international research team, U of A graduate student Scott Persons examined unusual claw marks left on a river bottom in China that is known to have been a major travel-way for dinosaurs.

Alongside easily identified fossilized footprints of many Cretaceous era animals including giant long neck dinosaur's researchers found a series of claw marks that Persons says indicates a coordinated, left-right, left-right progression.

"What we have are scratches left by the tips of a two-legged dinosaur's feet," said Persons. "The dinosaur's claw marks show it was swimming along in this river and just its tippy toes were touching bottom."

The claw marks cover a distance of 15 meters which the researchers say is evidence of a dinosaur's ability to swim with coordinated leg movements. The tracks were made by carnivorous theropod dinosaur that is estimated to have stood roughly 1 meter at the hip.

Fossilized rippling and evidence of mud cracks indicate that over 100 million years ago the river, in what is now China's Szechuan Province, went through dry and wet cycles. The river bed, which Persons describes as a "dinosaur super-highway" has yielded plenty of full foot prints of other theropods and gigantic four-legged sauropods.

With just claw scratches on the river bottom to go with, Persons says the exact identity of the paddling dinosaur can't be determined, but he suspects it could have been an early tyrannosaur or a Sinocalliopteryx. Both species of predators were known to have been in that area of China.

Persons is a U of A, PhD candidate and co-author of the research. It was published April 8 in the journal Chinese Science Bulletin.

Hundreds gather to remember 'BUCKWILD' star

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? Family, friends and fans are gathering in West Virginia for the funeral for "BUCKWILD" reality TV star Shain Gandee.

About 200 people lined up outside the Charleston Municipal Auditorium on Sunday for a public visitation set to begin at 11 a.m.

The popular "BUCKWILD" cast member, his uncle and another man were found dead last Monday inside a sport utility vehicle that was partially submerged in a deep mud pit about a mile from his home near Sissonville.

Autopsies determined all three died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Police say the muffler was below the surface and that mud covered the passenger side.

PFT: Giants' Ross sorry for 'vacation' comment

d9f865c5224fdd6365061ae7cf81a7d7Getty Images

Recently, free-agent linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo has been backpedaling more than a cornerback.

After suggesting this his support for same-sex marriage was a factor in his release by the Ravens, Ayanbadejo quickly said it wasn?t.? Now, not long after explaining that four gay players are considering coming out at the same time, Ayanbadejo says they aren?t.

Via Outsports.com, that was the upshot of Ayanbadejo?s Friday night appearance with Anderson Cooper of CNN.

?No, actually, what it is is, is there are organizations I?m in contact with, and there are individuals I?m in contact with and collectively we know of some gay players,? Ayanbadejo said when asked if he knows the names of the four gay players who are considering coming out.? ?And these players, some of them are anonymous, some of them we know who they are, but their identity is super secret and nobody wants to reveal who they are, and some of them don?t want to reveal who they are, rightfully so because it?s entirely up to them what they are going to do.

?What we want to facilitate is getting them all together so they can lean on each other, so they can have a support group.? And potentially it?s possible, it?s fathomable, that they could possibly do something together, break a story together.?

Apart from Ayanbadejo?s chronic inability to get his facts straight, he has an increasingly obvious desire to see one or more gay players come out. ?Gay players wrestling with this intensely personal decision easily could perceive that they are merely pawns in a much broader agenda being driven by straight players and/or members of the media who believe that the time has come for closeted gay players to be openly gay.

As former NFL player Wade Davis, who is openly gay, tells Outsports.com, ?The problem is that you have straight people speaking on the behalf of these closeted gay athletes, instead of letting the gay athletes speak for themselves.?

There?s a fine line between providing support and applying pressure.? While having multiple gay players come out at once would reduce the distraction created by one gay player coming out, if none of them choose to come out, that?s their business.

Ultimately, we believe people should be allowed to be who they are, and who they choose to be.? That includes straight, gay, and closeted.? If a gay player simply doesn?t want to come out, that?s his prerogative ? and no one gay or straight should be trying to get him to do something he doesn?t want to do.

Western diplomat on Iran talks: Sides still 'a long way apart'

Shamil Zhumatov / Reuters

Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili prays at a mosque in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Friday.

By Ali Arouzi, Correspondent, NBC News

News analysis

ALMATY,?Kazakhstan -- An air of cautious optimism hung over Almaty, Kazakstan, on Friday as Western and Iranian negotiators began the first day of another round of nuclear talks.

After Friday?s talks had ended for the day, however, a Western diplomat said the sides still had work to do.

"We had a long and substantial discussion on the issues, but we remain a long way apart on the substance,? the diplomat said. ?We are now evaluating the situation and will meet again tomorrow."

The six powers ? the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany ? met Iranian officials with the aim of settling a decade-long tussle over Tehran's nuclear program.

Iran has resisted pressure -- and hardening economic sanctions -- for years?arguing its uranium enrichment program is for peaceful purposes and therefore should be allowed to continue.

During the last meetings in February, the world powers appeared to have watered down their demands and offer mild relief to sanctions that have been strangling Iran?s economy.

Western diplomats were hoping for a discussion of the specific points of their proposals, such as closing a nuclear facility and shipping some enriched uranium stockpiles abroad in return for easing some sanctions.

International nuclear inspectors said Thursday Iran has made significant upgrades in its ability to enrich uranium. The US called this a provocative step ? but fortunately the centrifuges were installed above ground where the US can see them. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Iranian officials were caught off guard by what many view as the West?s relatively generous offer.

?For the first time during any of the international nuclear talks, we witnessed signals that the other side is acting in good faith,? Iran?s foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi told a news conference in Tehran on March 10, referring to the last discussions also held in Almaty.

?We hope they continue to do so,? he added.

Western diplomats, speaking on the condition of anonymity after the February talks, also said they were cautiously optimistic.?

This attitude comes after a string of failed talks.

Both sides have accused the other of not being realistic or serious about wanting to make a deal. Throughout, the West has charged Iran with delaying tactics, and of saying one thing then doing another.?

Both sides are in a sticky spot.?

President Barack Obama came to office on a mandate to end two wars, not to open up another front. So military action against Iran to halt a nuclear weapons program could prove unpopular in the United States.?

At schools, in shops, and on the streets of big cities and small towns, daily life plays out in Iran.

Iran is also walking a tightrope: Israel has consistently said its patience with diplomacy is running out and it may resort to military strikes on Iran.

Tehran is also under pressure from sanctions. The economic distress could spill over into massive street protests, something the government definitely does not want to see in the run-up to June elections.?

Yet another issue that hangs over talks: the war in Syria. ?

Iran is one of the Syrian government?s most important backers: Several senior Iranian military officials have already been killed in Damascus. Syrian rebels have accused the West of standing by as the regime of Bashar Assad kills tens of thousands of his own citizens.?

Obama?s reluctance to arm the rebels in Syria is partly because it would scupper negations with Iran over its nuclear program, according to foreign policy experts and some Western diplomats.?

Reuters contributed to this report.
