The 10 Forms of Twisted Thinking and How They Can Kill Your ...

My husband is bipolar. Out of respect for his privacy I rarely talk about it online. Like most couples with one (or more) bipolar person, we?ve had to struggle, we?ve had challenges, and we?ve had to work at everyday things that many people take for granted. Despite all that, though, I consider my husband?s bipolar a gift. Knowing and loving my husband means I?ve had the opportunity to learn a lot about our brains, brain chemistry, depression and the lies we tell ourselves when we?re feeling down or vulnerable.

A few years ago, when hubs and I were going through a rough time, my hubs? parents gave us a wonderful book called ?The Feeling Good Handbook? by David D. Burns, M.D.

On the cover, Dr. Burns claims you can ?overcome depression, conquer anxiety, and enjoy greater intimacy? through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. At first I was very skeptical but I decided to give the book a try. I loved it. Now I am constantly recommending it to others who suffer from bipolar/depression or those who are just having a rough time.

Why do I like it so much?

In this book Dr. Burns details the 10 Forms of ?Twisted Thinking? and gives instructions on how to untwist your thoughts. There are no counselors or therapists needed to succeed. All you need is YOU and your determination to get better. Dr. Burns? advice makes sense, it?s easy to remember, and it?s logical.

So, why am I bringing all of this up?

I caught myself thinking twisted today about my diet and realized how appropriate Dr. Burns? advice was for those of us who are trying to lose weight.

How can I not share it with you?!?!

Below is a list of the 10 Forms of Twisted Thinking, a short definition for each (I encourage you to read the book for more detailed info) and an example for each as it relates to health, fitness and/or weightloss:

1. All or Nothing Thinking ? This is black-or-white thinking at it?s finest and most unreasonable. I am often guilty of this!
Example:?I skipped my run on Monday so I?ve ruined my entire training schedule. I might as well just stop running altogether.?

2. Overgeneralization ? This could also be called ?always or never? thinking. It?s when you see a single event (usually negative) as a sign of a never ending pattern of negativity.
Example: ?I gained weight again this week. I?m always gaining weight. It will never change.?

3. Mental Filter ? This is when one single negative detail or event sours your entire experience.
Example: Your family and friends have started to praise you for your weight loss efforts. Everyone says you?re looking great and they?re proud of you! However, one friend says something negative about your diet choices and you obsess over it for days.

4. Discounting the Positive ? Just what it sounds like. Rejecting or dismissing a positive experience by insisting it didn?t count or wasn?t good enough.
Example: I?ve been going to bootcamp for weeks, have lost inches and gained lots of strength but I still can?t do a push-up like all the other women at the gym.

5. Jumping to Conclusions ? This is when you decide something is bad or wrong without any evidence to support your conclusion.
Example: ?Yoga is too difficult for people like me. I?m not even going to try it.? or ?The trainers at the gym will judge me because I?m so overweight. I can?t face the humiliation?

6. Magnification ? When you magnify your problems and shortcomings and minimize your strengths.
Example: ?It doesn?t matter that I?m getting out and exercising because I?m a terrible eater.?

7. Emotional Reasoning ? Relying on your emotions to tell you the ?truth? of the situation or to help you make a decision.
Example: ?I feel like I will never lose this weight. I?m completely hopeless.? or ?I?m so sad today, I should just stay inside.?

8. ?Should Statements? ? Telling yourself you should or should not be doing or expecting something. When you do the thing you shouldn?t, you feel like a rebel or a bad person.
Example: ?I shouldn?t eat that doughnut? or ?I should?ve walked to work.?

9. Labeling ? This is the extreme form of all-or-nothing or black-and-white thinking. You attach negative labels to yourself, other people or situations that lead to frustration, anger and low self-esteem.
Example: ?Trainers are just a bunch of dumb jocks. They can?t help me.? or ?Ugh, I?m such a failure.?

10. Personalization and Blame. ? Blaming yourself or someone else for an event that isn?t entirely under your (or their) control.
Example: With the kids home and your spouse sick you couldn?t make it to the gym for a week. ?If only I was a better mom or spouse, I could?ve somehow made it to the gym? or ?The reason I?m not losing weight is because my doctor isn?t telling me everything I need to know?

It?s SO easy to lie to ourselves we often do it without thinking. Soon we start to believe our twisted thoughts, and they can lead to failure or, even worse, depression.

Are you guilty of twisted thinking? What do you tell yourself to get over your twisted thoughts?

P.S. Once again, I highly recommend you read The Feeling Good Handbook for yourself. No, I?m not getting paid for promoting it, however, if you DO buy the book by following this link, I will get Amazon Affiliate credit!

Spurs Beat Clippers 96-86 To Take 3-0 Series Lead

LOS ANGELES ? Nothing was going to rattle the calm, cool and collected Spurs. Not even a 24-point deficit.

Tim Duncan scored 19 points, helping engineer a defining 24-0 run in the third quarter, and San Antonio defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 96-86 on Saturday to take a commanding 3-0 lead in their second-round playoff series.

"We didn't plan on being down that much," said Duncan, who at 36 is hungry to win the team's fifth NBA championship and first since 2006-07. "We stuck with it."

Led by Tony Parker's 23 points and his defense on an ailing Chris Paul, the Spurs kept running their plays even as Blake Griffin's early offensive assault buried them in a huge hole. Griffin missed three shots in the first half, when he scored 20 points and carried his team to a 24-point lead despite a left hip injury and a sprained right knee.

"They came out like we expected, very strong. Blake was making crazy shots," Parker said. "We just took our time. It's a long game, a very long game. At halftime, we were very calm."

Griffin had 28 points and 16 rebounds, and reserve Mo Williams added 19 points for the Clippers, who face some daunting NBA history heading into Game 4 on Sunday at Staples Center. No team has rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

"If we don't play with that sense of urgency, it's not going to be pretty," Griffin said.

The Clippers played a must-win Game 7 in the opening round on the road at Memphis and succeeded.

"We have to keep fighting," Paul said.

Rookie Kawhi Leonard added 14 points and Manu Ginobili 13 to help the top-seeded Spurs win their 17th in a row and improve to 7-0 in the playoffs.

"We all struggled in the first quarter. We didn't feel right out there," said Duncan, who like his teammates, looked to Parker to pick the team up.

"We follow his lead. He stuck with it, made some big shots down the stretch and continued to attack," Duncan said. "He was playing defense really hard and got up into Chris."

Besides Parker, the Spurs threw two other defenders at Paul. He finished with 12 points and 11 assists after two previous sub-par efforts in the series.

"Tony really ran the show well," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I'd say, `Let's do this' and he said, `No, let's do this,' and we'd do it."

After a quiet first half in which he scored eight points, Duncan helped the Spurs control the third quarter when they outscored Los Angeles 26-8.

The Spurs took their first lead during the 24-0 run on a fadeaway jumper by Duncan, who scored nine points in the outburst that put them ahead for good. Danny Green added seven and Leonard five.

"We kept telling Kawhi and Danny to stay calm," Parker said.

The Clippers' defense completely faltered and they piled up miss after miss on the offensive end.

"When they spread the floor and Tim Duncan runs a high pick-and-roll, it's trouble for a lot of teams," Griffin said. "That's basically what killed us in the third. This is what they do best."

The Clippers scored the final four points of the third, which ended with a turnover by Williams, to trail 69-61 heading into the fourth.

"You knew they were going to make a run. It was just a matter of trying to withstand it," Griffin said. "In the second half, especially the third quarter, we did a poor job of responding.

"I missed some shots I hit in the first half, easy shots."

San Antonio led by 11 points early in the fourth before the Clippers got within seven on consecutive baskets by Williams. Gary Neal hit a 3-pointer to launch a 13-9 spurt, capped by Parker's 3-pointer, that extended the Spurs' lead to 89-78. Paul, so dominant in the final period during the regular season, was limited to four points.

"I felt like we were playing good, but if you know anything about the Spurs, you know they are not going to let up," Paul said. "Everybody knows how explosive the Spurs are, but we just could not get a stop."

Reggie Evans, a defensive spark for the Clippers off the bench, missed 6 of 8 free throws in the final 3:42.

"They play the same whether they're up 20 or down 20," Griffin said of the veteran Spurs. "Their communication and rotations are so good. Offensively, they know exactly what they're going to do in every situation."

The Spurs were 9 of 22 from 3-point range, with Leonard hitting three.

Los Angeles came in 2-1 at home in the playoffs and 24-9 during the regular season. With their red-clad sellout crowd on its feet, the Clippers were still shooting 63 percent midway through the second quarter, when Griffin's one-handed dunk kept them ahead by 20 points.

The Spurs closed the half on a 15-5 spurt, with Parker and Ginobili scoring five each, to trail 53-43 at the break. Griffin missed just three of his 13 shots in the first half, when the Clippers controlled the boards and the paint.

The Clippers opened the game with a rush, outscoring the Spurs 33-11 while shooting 64 percent. Los Angeles ended the first quarter on a 20-2 run, including 14 in a row. Griffin scored 12 points in the spurt, hitting eight straight while the Spurs committed six turnovers and made just five of 20 field goals.

Notes: The Clippers have lost 29 of 33 games against the Spurs dating to Dec. 1, 2003. ... The Clippers have dropped all three games in the series by double digits. ... The Clippers have lost all six of their playoff series in franchise history after losing Game 1. ... The teams were even in the paint with 44 points each after the Spurs had dominated there in Game 2. ... The Clippers controlled the boards, 44-41, after being outrebounded in seven of their previous nine playoff games.

Quick Tips With Choosing A Domain Name | Millionaire Business ...

?

Buying a domain name is a quick process but thinking up of one takes time. You don?t want to jump in and buy just any domain that is available. People get a buzz when they think they have a cool domain name that is available and then buy it without realizing the domain name that they have won?t help them at all. People also get hosting and domain name packages confused. Hosting helps you with being able to get your website up and going.

You have to first buy the domain name and then you pick out a nice hosting package that meets your needs. It can be tough trying to choose a domain name online so here are some tips that might be able to help you before you go in and make a big mistake with picking the wrong name for your website.

When you have purchased a domain name online the one thing that you should know is that you cannot go back and change that domain name. You are stuck with it forever unless if you decide to sale the domain name. This is why it?s important that you think about what kind of name you need and what goes with what you are doing.

The only way to change the domain name is if you decide to get another one but then you are still stuck with what you had first so you would be paying for two domain names which is really pointless if you won?t be using the other one. People will either remember or won?t remember the domain name that you have so you should get one that is simple and one that people can easily type in on their computer and these days can easily research on their phone or tablets.

Another mistake that sometimes people make is that they buy a cool domain to them but the domain name is not something that most people can easily pronounce. You always want to have one to where people can say it without any problems. If they have issues saying it then they might not be able to tell their friends about it and that could cost you some sales that you might have had if the domain name was one that people could say. It does not matter if the website you have is awesome when people cannot pronounce it or tell their friends about that website then they might not be back again so say the name out loud and get other people to say it before you decide to buy it and make sure that people can pronounce it.

Do not buy domain names that have underscores, hypens or dashes. It is very complicated trying to type in those kind of names and also not very easy to remember. Many websites don?t have those in them so it?s not something that is natural and that?s another reason as to why people might not remember them or type them out. They might find it odd that your website has them and could even feel uncomfortable looking around because it?s just not something people normally do and so you could lose tons of traffic from having such things in your website.

Pick out a domain name that people will know already and might be looking for online. The keyword tool is a great way to research for popular words people might be searching online. Just make sure that someone else is not already using the domain name. Some companies might not have a website up but that could be their name so you don?t want to get a domain name that is a trademark and be forced to give it up. Think about what kind of website names you visit the most and review their names and let that influence you on picking out one.

Hyperlinks Are Dumb And Bleeding Money; How To Ensure Yours Aren?t

601px-WWW_logo_by_Robert_CailliauWhen an email hits our inbox, we know not only who it?s from but their entire web imprint. LinkedIn can point out the profile of the woman you interviewed for a sales role last week and the gentleman you spoke with earlier in the year at a conference. And rest assured that the dining room set you checked out over the weekend at CrateAndBarrel.com will haunt your online experience for the forseeable future. Data -- its collection and manipulation at scale -- has revolutionized how we interact online. Homepages, banner advertisements and what we see in our Facebook timeline are all tailored-to-fit the reader, and we don?t give it a second thought. But the hyperlink, the key feature that distinguishes hypertext from text has remained largely unchanged since Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the web.

Push your health care insurer to pay more | Health and Fitness

Save big on health care ? even when your body starts falling apart.

(Money magazine) ? It?s inevitable ? as you age, your body requires more repair. But there are ways to lower your medical costs. .

Money magazine gives you strategies to cut your costs by as much as 70% in six big areas ? from doctor visits to prescription drugs to dental care ? that are major sources of cash drains. This is the second of a two-part series on how to lower your medical expenses.

Oh, that aching back. And knee. And shoulder. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, more than 40% of 45- to 64-year-olds have had joint pain in the past 30 days alone; one-third had lower back pain in the previous 90 days.

To ease such musculoskeletal aches, doctors commonly recommend physical therapy. Two or three visits may suffice for a simple back strain; you often go twice a week for a few months after surgeries like rotator cuff repairs.

The repair bill

In-network co-pays typically run between $20 and $30 per visit or $160 to $240 a month for a fairly standard two-session-a-week treatment schedule. Those on a high-deductible plan paying full fare will typically spend $100 to $200 for an hour-long session.

Your savings strategy

Manage your insurer. Since physical therapy can potentially stave off the need for surgery, some firms have been upping PT benefits, says Mark Olson of Towers Watson. To qualify, you usually need a recommendation from your doctor.

Then your insurer must approve the care ? prior to your start and based on your condition ? and okay a set number of visits, which could be as few as three or four or as many as 12 or 15. Most will approve additional visits as long as your doctor or physical therapist makes the case for it and there?s no cap on benefits, says Jim Winkler of benefits consultant Aon Hewitt.

Be your own therapist. To cut down on the number of visits, have your PT put together a program with more exercises than you?d normally do at home.

?It?s up to you to have the self-discipline to really push yourself,? says Nancy White of the American Physical Therapy Association. You?ll need to check in every few weeks to see how you?re progressing and to modify your exercises accordingly.

Family health care costs to exceed $20,000 this year

Pay in cash. If your bill isn?t covered, your therapist may be very willing to reduce her price, says Joel Press, a physiatrist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Thanks to a 2008 parity law, if you work at a firm with over 50 workers that offers mental health coverage, the benefits must be on par with the company?s other medical coverage (that is, your insurer can?t restrict the number of therapy visits it pays for unless specialist visits are similarly restricted).

That?s good news for the legions of middle-aged folks overwhelmed by the juggling act of their lives. Thirteen percent of people 50 and older received mental health treatment or counseling in the past year. And countless more may not even know what ails them.

?Often people come in complaining of physical symptoms and don?t recognize that it is stress-related,? says Glen Stream, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The repair bill

Your co-pays or co-insurance should run the same for a therapy visit as for a primary-care or specialist appointment. Facing a high deductible? You?ll pay $65 to $200 an hour for individual appointments.

Your savings strategy

See if you can get it for free. More than 80% of large companies have employee assistance programs, which often offer workers three to eight sessions with a mental health counselor at no or low cost. That may be enough to help you through a temporary rough patch, such as the loss of a loved one, says Olson.

Your boss won?t find out: By law, these sessions must be kept confidential and cannot be noted in your personnel file.

Pick in-network. When most insurers limited coverage, it may have made sense to start your search for a therapist by asking friends or family for referrals. Now you should look for someone to treat your depression the same way you?d seek a doctor to treat your asthma, by starting your search within your insurer?s preferred provider network.

5 things to know about going out of network

Some large insurers have a tool on their website that lets you screen for in-network mental health pros. (For example, Blue Cross lets you search by specialty, location, gender, and whether they offer evening or weekend sessions.)

Savings: You?d spend $520 for six months? worth of weekly visits with an in-network therapist on a plan with a $20 in-network co-pay, vs. about $2,000 or more for an out-of-network doc.

Get the right diagnosis. One loophole in the parity act: Since no standard definition of ?medically necessary? exists in mental health, insurers can opt not to cover certain conditions, such as those not considered ?biologically based? like relationship problems or an eating disorder.

So grief counseling to help handle the death of a loved one might not be covered, but the depression that might arise from that loss probably would be, says Sarah Steverman of the nonprofit Mental Health America.

If your insurer refuses to pay your mental health bill, ask how they define ?medically necessary? and the reason your claim was denied (by law they must tell you); if you think you?re being denied benefits unfairly, ask your doctor to write a note explaining how your malady fits within your insurer?s definition.

It turns out you may not be done paying the price for all that Halloween candy you ate as a child. ?When you?re over 40, your teeth and fillings have simply incurred more mileage,? says Dr. Matthew Messina, a spokesman for the American Dental Association. Metal fillings often need to be replaced with a costly crown or, if several teeth are damaged, a bridge.

More than half of people over 55 have periodontitis, which can lead to decay and infection, according to the American Academy of Periodontology.

The repair bill

Those childhood cavities look like a bargain now. The average porcelain crown costs around $1,000, according to the American Dental Association; a three-unit bridge may reach $3,000. A deep periodontal cleaning will run you at least $600 for your whole mouth.

Most insurance covers routine cleanings and exams twice a year, but the good news ends there.

Standard coverage for crowns and bridges is often just 50%, and 60% to 80% for fillings. Many plans also have low annual maximums of just $1,200 (or less), which might not cover a single ?major restoration? or other procedure a year.

Your savings strategy

Play the calendar. ?Dental care is usually something people can budget for,? says Messina.

If you?re looking at, say, a $2,400 crown and you are close to your $1,200 annual max, ask your dentist if you can get a temporary crown and push the permanent work into the following calendar year.

Savings: In the prior example, you?d save at least 50% of the cost of the crown.

Let Uncle Sam help. Before open-enrollment season each fall, make an educated guess about what your out-of-pocket expenses will be for next year?s dental work. Then put an amount equal to your costs into your flexible spending account at work or into a health savings account (if you have a high-deductible insurance plan). That will reduce the net cost of the procedure by 30% to 40%, depending on your tax bracket.

No health benefits? How to shop for a solo plan

Alternatively, if you?re looking at a several expensive procedures (say, in addition to your own dental work, your teenager needs orthodontia or your spouse also needs a couple of crowns), bundling them into a single calendar year might allow you to take a medical tax deduction. You can write off health care expenses (including dental work) if they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income on your federal income taxes. While that dental bill might still smart, a tax break can go a long way toward softening the bite.

Save on health care, even as your body falls apart

Kochs help Republicans catch up on technology

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - In the 2008 presidential race, Barack Obama was famously effective in using new technologies to raise money, mobilize voters and target his message of change.

In this year's campaign, his opponents are determined to turn the tables.

Republican political operatives, some with deep financial backing from the billionaire Koch brothers and others, are unleashing about a half dozen major projects that take advantage of advanced database technologies to manage campaigns and target voters with personalized messages.

Few doubt that political parties and factions that can gain an edge in the data wars will be in a good position on election day - and could potentially build institutional advantages that will pay dividends for years to come.

IPhone apps, Web-based campaign management and micro-targeting of voters with personalized messages are a few of the services built around database technology that the left has used to find and motivate voters, most impressively in 2008.

People in the increasingly competitive political technology business say the industry is still in an early phase, with the massive data-collection potential of social media and mobile computing only beginning to be tapped.

Nevertheless the field is already creating tension between grassroots activists suspicious of big, centralized databases and political professionals who say they are essential.

"If you are talking to anybody on the ground, Tea Party activists, they are tired of centralized control," said Steven Kuivenhoven, a Michigan Tea Party organizer who is avoiding Washington-based tech groups.

The Republican and Democratic parties have passed the banner of technological leadership back and forth over the past decade. The Republican Party built a massive database of voters for the 2004 election, then Democrats in the last presidential election pulled together an independent database called Catalist that improved cooperation among allied groups. This year outside groups are leading the charge, especially on the conservative side, a nod to the rising power of political action committees and advocacy groups.

Shoestring startups are competing with efforts funded by billionaires, which some conservatives embrace as a triumph of laissez-faire. "God bless the free market," said Constantin Querard, an Arizona political consultant who uses one of the startups, rVotes, for managing volunteers and voter data. "We are probably two two-year cycles from weeding out the software that was well done and the software that wasn't as well executed."

THE KOCH COUNTERPUNCH

In 2008, Catalist helped the left win the technology battle. The database allowed unions and the Obama campaign to manage volunteers without stepping on each other's toes. Meanwhile, analysts could look for patterns in oceans of data that had been held in small pools by separate groups.

Now, Charles and David Koch, who have quietly bankrolled libertarian organizations such as the Cato Institute and the influential Mercatus Center at George Mason University, are behind an effort that aims to do for the right what Catalist did for the left.

Called Themis, the independent group is the most ambitious of the many conservative political technology projects now in development. People with direct knowledge of the group as well as political technology industry veterans say it is backed by the Koch brothers, although their names do not appear on an annual regulatory filing and Koch Industries spokespeople did not respond to requests for comment.

The Kochs own Koch Industries, the Wichita, Kansas-based natural resources conglomerate that refines oil, produces chemicals and owns the paper products company Georgia-Pacific. Chief Executive Officer Charles Koch and his brother David are worth $25 billion each, according to Forbes.

Themis staffers in their twenties and thirties, clad in jeans and checked shirts, work out of a suite in a nondescript office building in Alexandria, Virginia. City records indicate that the company expanded recently, and a federal filing shows millions of dollars in the bank.

Themis operates like many other Koch projects - in secrecy. A reporter retrieving a federal filing from the company was not allowed inside the unmarked front door, and Themis executives declined or did not respond to requests for comment.

Themis raised $7.7 million in its first year, according to its 2010 return to the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt 501 c(4) organization, which it released this year after successfully petitioning for the maximum possible delay. As a 501 c(4), Themis can work with advocacy groups but cannot coordinate with candidates.

The federal filing does not list financial backers, but people with direct knowledge of the group say it is backed by the Kochs. Ben Pratt, the chief operating officer, describes himself on LinkedIn as a former Koch Industries executive who is now a management consultant and executive coach teaching the business theories developed by Charles Koch.

Themis's ambition to become an analytical powerhouse for the right is clear from its list of business partners, including several heavy hitters in the computer analytics world. Its top contractor in 2010, paid $1.1 million, was voter database company Intell360, which employed former Republican National Committee Network and Online Services Director Steve Ellis at the time, according to LinkedIn.

Intell360's website describes services ranging from finding email and phone numbers for voters to "data mining" for voters likely to respond to tailored messages to targeting ads "down to the zip code, census block or individual level." Neither the company nor Koch Industries responded to requests for comment. Pratt declined to speak when reached by phone.

Despite the vast resources behind it, Themis may find it difficult to reach its goal this year. One person close to the group predicts it will not catch up to the left in the current campaign cycle; the Obama campaign is engaged in complex modeling and scouring social media data for information, people in the industry say. Another conservative data industry person said there is no sign of high-end modeling by Themis.

Themis does not have to catch up to make an impact, though. It is building its database and signing up advocacy groups to use its services and contribute data. The person close to Themis said its work focuses on identifying active supporters - those with a propensity to attend rallies or engage their representatives, for instance - and discovering the "cream of the crop" - persons active in several allied groups.

AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE

The other major database effort on the right is a for-profit group called Data Trust, which is updating the Republican Party's somewhat dusty national file of voters. Modeled on Catalist, Data Trust hopes to make a profit by selling data to advocacy groups, candidates and business groups, incorporating clients' information into its database when they agree.

The party will keep its database, but Data Trust will be able to pay for updating and expanding the data in a way that Republicans have not had the resources to do in recent years, people familiar with the project say. However, it will leave the high-end analysis of data to clients.

Themis and Data Trust will be competitors at times. But there may be room for both: Themis caters to a conservative crowd that distrusts what it sees as the politically expedient instincts of the Republican Party. And some groups may want more than one database provider. "Never trust any one source 100 percent," said Gary Marx, executive director of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a religious group in Duluth, Georgia, that is planning to find and contact 27 million potential conservative Christian voters in swing states this election cycle.

American Crossroads, a Washington D.C.-based conservative advocacy group led by former Republican Party officials and associated with Karl Rove, is not choosing sides, even though its chairman, former Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan, helps run Data Trust.

"We plan to be a client of Data Trust. We also have a good relationship with Themis," said Crossroads spokesman Jonathan Collegio.

GROUND GAMES

Themis and Data Trust may have trouble getting some potential allies on board. Plenty of grassroots groups say they don't need the help of a big, Washington-based database outfit and say they have what Republicans need most: real-time data. They are turning to new technology systems that let campaigns and groups manage volunteers and donors.

A plethora of new tech tools with names like Gravity, rVotes and NationBuilder can help organize door-to-door campaigns, harvesting the type of information that feeds a successful database. All the companies behind them are for-profit.

"If the local county group is knocking on people's doors, and identifying pro-life or anti-immigrant or anti-health-care voters, they could be flagging that information on the database and instead of having that information be in an activists' basement somewhere, it's flagged back on this master file and available to other organizations, which are wanting to organize around those issues," said Ken Strasma, head of data analysis firm Strategic Telemetry, which works for Democrats. "That's what could make this a very powerful tool."

Many grassroots activists are wary of big databases, however, especially if they are linked with Washington. Conservatives, like liberals, are not a monolithic group. Some factions would prefer to retain control of their data.

"I wish I had the Koch brothers' money, but I don't want to be beholden to them," said Peter Wolf, an Ohio Tea Party organizer. He supports rVotes, a program marketed to the right that intends to offer a national database in which campaigns control data they add.

Smaller groups may also be immune to the lure of the big databases because they can get low-cost help from companies such as Aristotle, an unaligned commercial vendor that sells voter records for 3 cents each and offers analytics and social media as well.

Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch failed to win his party's endorsement at the recent state caucus after a Tea Party campaign against him. He now faces a run-off primary battle. FreedomWorks, a group that has severed Koch ties, was a major instigator of the anti-Hatch effort. It used commercial database and analytics vendors to find likely caucus delegates. "What it took Orrin Hatch a year to do in terms of preparation for the caucus, we were able to do in a month and a half," said Russ Walker, vice president of political and grassroots campaigns for FreedomWorks for America. "I really do think the commercial world is ahead of us."

Whether the Kochs or any other group make a major leap forward will depend on how many allies they find. Querard, the Arizona political consultant, sees the technology race as a question of critical mass.

"Whoever's got the most users will probably see the most improvement," he said.

Podcast Basics For Cortaro MLM Business Bloggers | Tucson AZ ...

Podcast Basics For Cortaro MLM Business Bloggers

Today?s Cortaro direct selling article is for Cortaro internet rookies who want to kick up their web marketing a notch by adding a podcast to their Cortaro home business blog.

A podcast is a multimedia file that is downloaded for playback on a mobile device such as an iPod or laptop computer. It can be a digital recording of a radio program or, more often, a program produced solely for online distribution. A podcast can be a recording of a webcast: a live Cortaro program that is ?streamed? or broadcast on the internet in real time. When this is the case, it is similar to a DVD recording of a live program that you store in the database of your playback device.

A related term is the acronym RSS which probably originally stood for Rich Site Summary feed but is sometimes used for Really Simple Syndication. You have probably seen the term RSS on websites. An RSS feed allows digital files to be downloaded in a standard format. Tucson podcast listeners often subscribe to favorite ongoing podcasts. When new podcasts are produced, they are automatically downloaded by RSS applications.

It is fairly simple hardware- and software-wise to product your own podcast for your Cortaro online business
. Your laptop may already have recording capability. If not, you can buy any equipment you need in the Tucson area.

Cortaro business owners operating on a shoestring will be happy to know that basic recording and editing software can be downloaded for free. If you want to get fancy, you can always buy more sophisticated software at Arizona specialty computer stores. I recommend using a headset microphone so the mic is always in the right spot to get a clear and consistent recording.

Now the fun part: what will you podcast? The possibilities are endless for Cortaro direct marketers. You can record Arizona trade show presentations, interviews with founding distributors of your Cortaro direct sales company, or create an entertaining pitch about your Tucson business opportunity. Let your expertise and enthusiasm shine.

Creating a podcast gives you a chance to connect with potential Cortaro customers or downline members in a personal way.

Using Big Data as Revenue Driver: Interview with Data.com's Andy ...

We are less than one week away from the 2012 Marketo User Summit and the lineup we have in place for keynotes includes the top thought leaders in sales and marketing. One of which is Andy MacMillan, Salesforce Data.com?s Senior Vice President of Products and Marketing. We are excited to welcome him to our blog to give us more details about Data.com and how businesses can use big data to drive revenue.

Please provide a brief overview of your business. What do you do? When was it formed? How many employees do you have now? How is your company aligned to deliver/support cloud services to your customers?

Launched in September 2011 at Dreamforce, Data.com is Salesforce?s solution that is democratizing data by delivering instant access to the business data businesses need right inside Salesforce. We provide the data foundation customers need to succeed as a social enterprise by helping them easily find new customers and clean their data right in the cloud.

As businesses transform into social enterprises, they need a solid data foundation to better understand and engage customers and prospects. Data.com delivers this foundation with accurate crowd sourced contact data matched to leading account data from Dun & Bradstreet. This allows customers like Brainshark to greatly increase their marketing qualified lead opportunities.

Given the Internet, Google, social media, and the entire digital information revolution, the data universe has exploded like a super nova in recent years. How has this affected your company?s ability to deliver/support cloud services to your customers?

The cloud and data go hand in hand. Being a cloud-based solution, Data.com ties strongly into the digital information revolution. Since this super-nova, customers are sharing more information and therefore expect a new level of engagement and customization from marketers. Data.com helps our customers deliver against this need by making it easy to build targeted lists to relevant groups of people, ensuring marketers can segment their messages and enhance engagement with relevant content to prospects and customers.

Our customer, Motorola Solutions, saw a significant increase in form conversions from their email campaigns by moving to the use of targeted lists with segmented messages.

Data.com makes targeting easy by gathering complete information on all our contacts, including broad titles. This data comes from the 2 million strong Data.com community. This community makes over a million updates a month, updating data in real-time to address the rapid growth and pace of change, while also maintaining a high level of data accuracy. All of this data along with company profiles is accessed in the cloud directly in salesforce.com.

Can you comment on how big data is becoming even more valuable as our analytical and computing abilities continue to expand?

The velocity and volume of data is expanding everyday, and finding ways to manage and analyze data is becoming more of a challenge to companies. We think this data presents the opportunity for more data and deeper insights, as well as the challenge of easily identifying and integrating the right data into critical business process.

The big data challenge can be broken into two categories: management of the data and consumption of the data. Salesforce has demonstrated the ability to aggregate and manage large volumes of data in the cloud. Our platform handles millions of transactions daily to service different customer data inquiries and demonstrates true success in using the cloud to manage big data.

The cloud can also offer a solution for consumption of data. Historically, access to data has been a barrier to running real-time analytics and empowering teams to take action. Once data is available in the cloud and consumed via cloud solutions, access to the right data and insights can be made available directly within key business applications.

Data.com focuses on the delivery of business big data. We equip our customers with the tools to align contact information with global company data to deliver insight integrated directly in their CRM. By combining access, unification, and alignment directly in their CRM systems, customers have been able to align and utilize resources to improve the effectiveness of their sales and marketing teams.

We recommend that you take this specialized focus for other big data solutions like social big data or financial big data to create a solvable problem and achieve results.

So how big is big data? And why is it important to all of us involved with deploying marketing automation and Revenue Performance Management (RPM) to drive profitable, sustainable growth?

Big data is only a big challenge when you do not take steps to prioritize and segment. Here are some steps to make big data work for you:

1) Don?t address everything: decide what data is important to your business and find the tools to address those needs

2) Make big data accessible: by leveraging data from the cloud within your applications, you allow for collaboration and transparency

3) Take action on results: integrating with tools like Salesforce and Marketo allows you to quickly access segmented data and provide a clear process for mobilizing your sales and marketing teams to act on your aggregated data

Is it possible to actually ?connect the dots? between random and typically unstructured data to create information that a corporation can act upon to drive sales and marketing results? How?

Yes! Companies today often struggle with the phenomenon of ?data islands?. Data islands occur when business data is updated sporadically in disparate systems, without unification or analysis that keeps the data fresh and usable.

The solution: Deploy a system for business data management that allows for interaction and visibility for the whole organization to access, update and maintain the data. By combining access with unification, marketers have a clear sense of how to make data actionable and can approach their goals with confidence.

A great example is the Bespoke Collection, who struggled to find new resellers to grow their wine business. They used Data.com to connect the dots to the right vendors and improve sales and marketing effectiveness.

What trends do you expect to see in cloud computing over the next 12 months?

The biggest trend we are seeing is the emergence of social enterprises. Companies today are demanding social tools to build alignment, transparency, collaboration, and ultimately put their customers at the heart of their businesses.

The beauty of the social enterprise lies in this ability to integrate social collaboration with companies and employees to create a complete and relevant view of customers and prospects that is actionable across departments.

This social zeitgeist will continue to drive a dramatic shift in cloud computing as communication becomes fluid, traditional corporate hierarchies are flattened, and customers expectations for transparency and service demand personal interaction, customized products, and targeted engagement.

Thanks, Andy!

Records detail George Zimmerman's medical injuries

(AP) ? Court records show George Zimmerman had a pair of black eyes, a nose fracture and two cuts to the back of his head after the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

The medical records were part of evidence released Tuesday that prosecutors have in the second-degree murder case against Zimmerman. He has entered a plea of not guilty and claims self-defense in the Feb. 26 shooting. A message left Tuesday evening with Zimmerman's attorney was not immediately returned.

Zimmerman was treated Feb. 27 at Altamonte Family Practice. A phone call made Tuesday evening to the practice rang unanswered.

ABC News first reported Zimmerman's injuries from the medical records. Some of the injuries were previously reported by The Associated Press based on video of Zimmerman at a jail sally port.

Bristol Palin Eviscerated By Celebrities Over Gay Marriage Comments, Obama Criticism

Bristol Palin is, predictably, receiving a swift and solid Twitter smackdown after speaking out against President Barack Obama's support of gay marriage.

Palin said, in short, that heterosexuals make better parents, Obama is a pushover who lets kids script his policy statements, and Glee might make you gay.

Shortly after writing her blog post ripping Obama, Bristol's hearing about it.

A few comments directed at the unwed 21-year-old mother, who says "in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home," are as follows:

Nina Dobrev Understands Elena's Decision On 'Vampire Diaries'

'Diaries' star tells MTV News about her character's game-changing decision on Thursday night's season finale.
By Jocelyn Vena

Nina Dobrev
Photo: MTV News

The "Vampire Diaries" season finale Thursday night answered some questions (like which Salvatore brother Elena wanted), but also posed a bunch more.

Warning: spoilers ahead!

As the episode, titled "The Departed," came to a close, a tear-filled Elena told Damon that while she cared for him, her one true love is his good-guy brother, Stefan.

"I understand why she made the decision," Nina Dobrev told MTV News at the launch of the "Like Her, Like Me" Seventeen magazine campaign where she debuted her "got milk?" ad about her character Thursday night in New York. "I respect her decision, and I think, having seen the last three years, what's happened in her life, everyone will also. They may not be happy, half the people will not be happy regardless, but they'll get it, and it's her decision at the end of the day."

And, the drama didn't end there: After Elena broke the news to Damon, she and her friend Matt drove off the same bridge her parents did years before, their car sinking into the river.

Much like that other time, Stefan plunges into the water to save her, except she sacrifices herself to save her pal. Cut to the very last second of the episode, where her dead body lies still while Stefan looks on, mourning her loss. But, nothing is what it seems, and her eyes open. Little did anyone know, she had vampire blood in her, courtesy of Dr. Meredith Fell, from a previous injury.

Dobrev said "it doesn't matter" what she thinks Elena should have done, adding, "I have absolutely no say in who she chooses or how that all goes down. That's a Julie Plec question."

Well, Plec, the show's executive producer, said that for Elena, life as a vampire is a distinct possibility. "The ending had been in the works for about two years," she told Entertainment Weekly. "It felt like now was the time — when you're left with no grownup, no adult supervision, no parent, no guardian — for Elena to experience the next evolution of her journey."

Over the course of season three, Elena certainly faced a number of hardships, including the loss of her mentor, vampire hunter Alaric. "All the stuff that we did with having her get stronger over the course of the year, training and getting in touch with her physical self, and all the grief and all the emotion that she went through, all the compassion that she has for everybody, it will all play into next year and what kind of person and vampire she will actually be — if she should choose to see the transition through," Plec explained.

So, will she transition? The executive producer noted, "There will be a discussion to be had about it at the beginning, but the road we're going down is pretty balls out."

Kleiner Perkins And Sequoia Fund $6.5M Round For Cross-Device Ad Targeter Drawbridge

drawbridge logoWhen two of the biggest names in venture capital (arguably still the biggest) both invest in a startup, you know it's probably time to take notice. So yes, take notice: A cross-device ad targeting startup called Drawbridge has raised a $6.5 million Series A from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital. The company was founded in November 2010 by Kamakshi Sivaramakrishnan, a scientist at AdMob and then, after the acquisition, at Google. Sivaramakrishnan says she started the company because she saw the proliferation of ad targeting technology on the desktop web, while there was "no significant technology innovation" on the mobile side. So she decided to tackle the problem herself, "outside of the big G."
